A milling

cutter is a rotary tool with one or more teeth used for milling. During work, each tool tooth intermittently cuts off the allowance of the workpiece in turn. Milling cutters are mainly used to machine planes, steps, grooves, forming surfaces and cutting workpieces on milling machines.

Eight commonly used milling cutters:

1. Cylindrical milling cutter

For machining planes on horizontal milling machines. The teeth are distributed on the circumference of the milling cutter, and are divided into straight teeth and spiral teeth according to the tooth shape. According to the number of teeth, there are two kinds of coarse teeth and fine teeth. The number of teeth of the helical tooth coarse tooth milling cutter is small, the strength of the knife tooth is high, and the chip space is large, which is suitable for rough machining; Fine tooth milling cutters are suitable for finishing.

2. Surface milling cutter

Also known as disc milling cutter, it is used for machining planes on vertical milling machines, face milling machines or gantry milling machines, and there are cutter teeth on the end face and circumference, and there are also coarse teeth and fine teeth. There are three types of structures: integral type, tooth type and indexable type.

3. End mill

Used for machining grooves and step faces, etc., the knife teeth are on the circumference and end face, and cannot be fed axially during work. When the end mill has end teeth passing through the center, it can be fed axially.

4. Three-sided milling cutter

It is used to machine various grooves and step faces with teeth on both sides and circumference.

5. Angle milling cutter

For milling grooves at an angle, there are two types of single angle and double angle milling cutters.

6. Saw blade milling cutter

It is used for machining deep grooves and cutting workpieces, and there are more teeth on its circumference. In order to reduce the friction during milling, there is a sub-declination angle of 15′~1° on both sides of the tooth. In addition, there are keyway milling cutters, dovetail milling cutters, T-slot milling cutters and various form milling cutters.

7. T-shaped milling cutter

Used to mill T-shaped grooves.

8. Sharp tooth milling cutter

A

narrow edge strip is ground on the rake face to form a back angle, which has a higher life due to the reasonable cutting angle. The tooth back of the sharp tooth milling cutter has three forms: straight, curved and polyline. Straight backs are often used for finishing milling cutters for fine teeth. The tooth strength of curved and broken line teeth is better, can withstand heavy cutting loads, and is often used for coarse tooth milling cutters
